Getting what you want out of life is not easy.
Have you ever come across people who have a passive approach toward life? lets call them the average Joe. Although Joe accounts for around 90% of the population.
These Joes are hard working, honest, reasonable people who are literally everywhere in society. They have a foreign holiday once a year (usually at the cheapest ‘all-inclusive’) and drive a car that has seen better years. They live in an average neighbourhood, watch the average sports, eat out frequently at chain or fast food restaurants and enjoy the ‘simpler’ pleasures.
Joes don’t set any goals and they just live life on a casual, “get up-go to work-come home-watch TV” basis. They have been the same for the past 1 year, 3 years, 5 years from now, and their lives are largely the same, save for a few changes that are really more forced upon them as time progresses.
Joes are the people who keep moaning about how expensive things are, what the Government has done, what their company has done, how the super-markets rip them off, and how tough life is? Maybe they are struggling with their bills, relationships, children growing up, no savings and afraid of technology. They even seem afraid of tomorrow.
“You need a plan to build a house. To build a life, it is even more important to have a plan or goal.”
(the late) Zig Ziglar
Every now and again, you get sight of a rising star. Someone that enters your world and quite often that Joe is intimidated by this person. This person not only has big ideas, but they are working hard, they are working extra hard and they are working extra to build their dreams. Joe and his friends are always warning them they will get hurt when everything comes crashing down (as if they know) and that no one will ever give them a lucky break (like they need one), or even that what they do is based on lies and falsehoods and the “system” will keep them down. Sound familiar?
These rising stars have set their goals and made plans for their accomplishment. They never stick around for long, the learn what they need and they move on. They soon explore new worlds with people who are better positioned to teach them and help them progress. They are gone. Into the heavens and beyond.
Goal setting is the first step toward successful goal achievement. It marks your first point toward success. It is what put your life into real action mode. Without this step, the other steps of goal achievement cannot take place.
“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.”
(the late) Jim Rohn
Why Set Goals?
1. Goals Propel You Forward
Having a goal written down with a set date for accomplishment gives you something to plan and work for. A written goal is an external representation of your inner desires; its a constant reminder of what you need to accomplish.
2. Goals Transform Insurmountable Mountains Into Foothills
Most of us have big dreams that seem impossible to accomplish. Its easy to feel discouraged when you’re staring at a massive, seemingly insurmountable mountain.
3. Goals Help Us Believe In Ourselves
Setting goals for yourself is a way to fuel your ambition. Goal setting isn’t just about creating a plan for your life and holding yourself accountable, its also about giving us the inspiration necessary to aim for things we never thought possible.
4. Goals Hold You Accountable For Failure
If you don’t write down concrete goals and give yourself a timeline for achievement, how can you look back and re-evaluate your path if you fail?
5. Goals Tell You What You Truly Want
There are certainly times where we set goals that don’t really reflect what we want. Sometimes we think we need more money, when really we need a change of environment, or someone to love. Sometimes we think we want more free time, but what we really want is work that we can be truly passionate about. Sometimes we think we want to be alone, but really we need to be around more positive people.
6. Goals Help Us Live Life To The Fullest
When you take the time to set goals, you ensure that your life is geared towards getting the most out of every moment. There’s so much to do and experience in life, but many of the things we want to achieve and experience won’t be handed to us – we need to work for it.
lost in the forest.
7. Give You Laser Focus
Goals give you a single focal point to place your attention in. Whereas your purpose gives you a broad, directional focus to move your life in, goals gives you laser focus on what exactly to spend your time and energy on. Think of your time, energy and efforts as input, and results as the output. A goal acts as your funnel which guides and channels those inputs effectively into your desired output.
If you want to get the most out of your precious moments of life, you have to know what you want.
Of course, this doesn’t mean you have to have every single moment of your life planned out. After all, throughout your exciting journey, you’ll find lots of interesting things to see and do that you never would have thought of before you started. I can even guarantee that each destination you select will change as you travel down the road and learn more about yourself and the world you inhabit.
With my help you can learn to be a better, more fulfilled, appreciative, kinder, more tolerant, loving, happier, content person.
However, without a clear set of identified goals, plans for their accomplishment, the disciplines and skills to work on those plans and the understanding to observe, adapt and move forward, of what you want to do and where you want to go …
… you’ll never be able to live life to the fullest.
